Grotte di Stiffe
Via Del Mulino Stiffe, 2, 67028 Stiffe AQ, Italy
Grotte di Stiffe is one of Italy’s top Caves to visit. Inside the caves are beautiful caverns with stalactite and stalagmite formations but what makes the tour unique is the stunning waterfall inside the cave emptying into a small lake. A river runs through the cave and at its peak flow the sound in the caves are almost deafening. The best time to see the waterfall is in spring since that’s when there’s the most water, at other times of year it can be down to just a trickle.
Every ticket comes with a tour, these are provided in both Italian & English. There are also some hiking trails nearby so remember to bring your walking boots!

How to get there
The quickest way to get the Grotte di Stiffe is to take the Autostrada and get off at the L’Aquila turn off, this takes about an hour and a half. However there is a more scenic route that takes you through the Gran Sasso National Park, this takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes but it is worth the extra time.
It is advisable to call ahead if you are going in the winter as they might not be open. You have to go to the visitor centre first (this is the point shown on the map) they will then give you directions to get to the grotto.
